Reporting to the Assistant Manager of Service Operations, our caretakers provide exceptional cleaning in over 140 schools across the City of Surrey.  Our team of spare board caretakers provide essential coverage for day-to-day absences and short-term assignments across the District. As a caretaker with the District, you are part of a dynamic team of professionals dedicated to providing a clean, safe and welcoming environment for our students, families and staff. In addition to building services, our caretakers enjoy engaging in customer service opportunities when working with diverse user-groups, school staff and administration. As such strong communication skills when working with individuals from diverse backgrounds is essential.

The successful applicants must be a team player, ready to be part of a cohesive, effective team of professionals in this busy department that holds great pride in their work. The department requires applicants to be prepared to work effectively in a small team as well as independently to complete top quality work in various District facilities.

Spare board caretakers must be available for day or afternoon shift as needed. Our caretakers have access to top-quality tools and equipment. The District Facility prides itself on a safety-first culture and our caretakers are provided with extensive training and support to work safely.

Applicants must have:

  • Completion of a Building Services Worker Certificate from a recognized institute;
  • A valid Class 5 BC Driver’s license;
  • Sufficient physical strength and health to perform the duties of the position as required. This includes the ability to manually remove snow during inclement weather;
  • Experience working in an institutional setting is a bonus!


Surrey Schools provides its staff with excellent work-life balance.  This is a unionized position with an hourly rate of $23.57/hr., plus a liberal benefit package which includes pension, extended health/dental and generous vacation.
