T2021-317: Counsellor- Secondary District Alternate Programs, 1.00 FTE

The District is seeking a skilled individual to be a member of an interdisciplinary team that provides support to youth who are at risk from being disengaged from school and community. The Counsellor, working collaboratively with school based, District and Alternate Education Program staff, and alongside key community service partner agencies, is responsible for designing, facilitating and supporting a comprehensive counselling program for students within Secondary District Alternate Programs and Continuing Education. 

The Counsellor is expected to work a flexible schedule compatible to the core operational hours of the District Alternate Programs, as well as:

  • Work with teachers from the student’s home school (where appropriate) to help students succeed in transitioning to Secondary District Alternate Programs and Continuing Education, as well as collaborate with program staff in developing comprehensive learning plans for each individual student.
  • Plan and prepare curriculum and learning experiences relating to student well-being.
  • Provide one to one and small group counselling to identified students.
  • Work with Career Programs, Alternate program and District staff to develop individualized and small group opportunities for students to foster the transferable skills necessary for life after school, as well as connections with Youth Train and Trades, Post-Secondary and/or Continuing Education Programs.
  • Provide support to students who are experiencing emotional dysregulation, as well as support staff in implementing strategies and supports in relation to the individual student learning plan.
  • Support staff and students in crisis management situations within the programs.
  • Provide leadership and support to program staff around mental health issues, and work in collaboration with the District Mental Health School Liaisons.
  • Work collaboratively with program staff to develop programs and supports to engage parents in families in their students learning plan.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Ability/Requirements:

  • Master’s degree in Counselling or Counselling Psychology
  • Possess or be eligible for a BC Professional Teaching Certificate
  • Successful teaching experience at the appropriate level
  • Knowledge of evidence-based (or informed) practices related to supporting children and youth with anxiety disorders, mood disorders, depression, past trauma and or other concerns/diagnose
  • Ability to collaborate effectively and participate as a member of a multi- disciplinary team, as well as thorough knowledge of community support agencies.
  • Comprehensive understanding of child and youth mental health issues, including experience working with concurrent disorders. Working knowledge of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM V)
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of trauma informed practices.
  • Demonstrated commitment to professional growth in evidence-based practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in the community in an outreach capacity.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct risk assessments and work with youth with complex mental health and in some cases addiction issues.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish programming to assist youth with accessing school and work opportunities.
