Facilities Irrigation                                                                     Technician/Grounds Maintenance

 

SUMMARY

The primary focus of this position is the installation, troubleshooting and maintenance of commercial irrigation systems throughout the school district. Reporting to the Grounds Supervisor/Grounds Lead Hand, performs grounds maintenance tasks to ensure that district grounds and equipment are maintained with regard to safety, serviceability and appearance.

 

DUTIES

  • Designs,plans and installs new and/or upgrades existing irrigation systems
  • Estimates irrigation repair, maintenance and upgrade projects in terms of labour and material, recommends and purchases supplies and equipment
  • Maintains, troubleshoots and repairs existing irrigation, drainage and sewage systems
  • Troubleshoots and repairs electrical components and central irrigation control computers
  • Performs general and seasonal system maintenance
  • Performs system start-ups, evaluations and winterizations
  • Tests irrigation systems for proper functioning of valves and timers; Records detailed inspections.
  • Reads diagrams and blueprints to layout and locate irrigation vales, timers and wiring.
  • Locates, excavates and repairs or replaces damaged or malfunctioning equipment.
  • Assesses water efficiency and makes adjustments to quickly correct over or under watering.
  • Performs accurate and timely record-keeping.
  • Maintains inventory of irrigation parts and supplies.
  • Drives and operates all vehicles and machinery used by the Ground Maintenance staff in the performance of the work
  • Operates all minor and heavy-duty power tools (eg. chainsaw, power auger, drills, jackhammers, chippers, and tampers, lawn mowers, grass trimmers, and leaf blowers)
  • Assists with the construction and maintenance of playground equipment, fencing, walkways, staircases, boom gates, and flagpoles
  • Performs general field and site maintenance: layout and line marks all types of sports fields, cuts grass, prunes trees; plants and maintains district grounds; sweeps sidewalks, cleans parking lots including snow and ice removal
  • Operates digital technology; including email, online databases and facilities management software used by SD63
  • Provides oversight of grounds maintenance staff when they are assisting in irrigation-related tasks
  • Performs minor maintenance and repairs on equipment
  • Transports supplies and equipment including the cartage of furniture and fixtures
  • Reads and interprets drawings and specifications
  • Perform all tasks in accordance to with Health and Safety Regulations

    QUALIFICATIONS

  • Valid Irrigation Level 2 IIABC Certificate specializing in the service and installation of irrigation systems and equipment
  • 2 years’ commercial experience in irrigation system installation, maintenance and repair.
  • Grade 12
  • 18 months’ commercial experience working in grounds, landscaping and/or horticulture.
  • Valid B.C. Class 5 Driver’s license
  • Working knowledge of the operation of hand and power tools and grounds maintenance equipment (e.g. sharpen mowers including back lapping)
  • Specialized relevant training (e.g. Horticultural related courses, Backhoe Safety Training, Forklift Safety Training, Front End Loader Training, etc.)
  • Knowledge in the use and operations of large and small equipment (district vehicles, sweeper, forklift, tractor and all implements).
  • Working knowledge of the implementation of drawings and specifications
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs or more and excavating/back-filling necessary holes and trenches in a safe manner.
  • Ablility to work well outdoors under all adverse weather conditions.

DESIRABLE SKILLS

  • Basic knowledge of WHMIS legislation and WCB regulations and C.S.A. standards
  • Completion of Forklift Safety training, Backhoe Safety training, Skid Steer Safety training

 

Work Environment

This position requires the incumbent to have physical abilities such as strength and manual dexterity. The incumbent must be able to perform all required functions of this position in a safe and effective manner. While performing the duties of this position, the Irrigation Tech/Grounds Maintenance is regularly required to stand, walk, bend, lift, crouch, reach, stoop or kneel. This position is regularly exposed to seasonal outdoor environmental conditions including cool and wet west coast weather conditions along with extreme heat.
