The Vancouver Board of Education welcomes applications for the position of:
Alternate Format Transcriber
(Technical & Resource Support D)
 

 Location: Provincial Resource Centre for the Visually Impaired 
(#106-750 W 75th Ave, Vancouver)

Position Type: Permanent
Hourly Salary: $34.46
Hours of Work: 7 hours per day
(Annual Salary: $62,717)

  

PRCVI / ARC-BC is a provincial resource program established to support school districts and group I and II independent schools in meeting the needs of students with blindness/visual impairment and perceptual disabilities through the provision of alternate format materials and consultation support. 
 

In this role, you will:

  • Transcribe textbooks into large print, braille format and electronic text in accordance with national and/or international transcription standards
  • Edit print material and prepare transcriber’s notes and annotations
  • Produce tactile diagrams and maps through manual and computerized means using CorelDraw X8 and Stereo Copying
  • Proofread all braille and electronic format materials to ensure accuracy
  • Duplicate, bind and label copies of braille books or e-text as required, use braille embossers, thermoform machine, tactile image enhancer and a variety of digital storage media
  • Evaluate and apply new production techniques and braille standards as found in current professional journals and code manuals
  • Keep statistical production and alternate format unit records
  • Provide technical/resource support to alternate format producers in BC School Districts and Independent Schools
  • Provide technical and resource support to the department

 

 Qualifications:

  • Completion of Grade 12 plus the following certificates: CNIB (UEB) Transcription and Textbook Format Transcription, Proofreader and Textbook Format Code
  • Minimum 3 years' experience in braille textbook transcription
  • Candidates will be required to write a braille transcription proficiency test in UEB (transcription of a short passage and the creation of tactile graphic files using CorelDraw.)

 

Skills/Knowledge:

  • Training and experience in adapting and modifying standardized examinations
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and proofreading skills
  • Experience translating foreign languages into braille an asset
  • Knowledge of basic coding in HTML an asset
