Position Description

A temporary part time (0.2) primary teacher is required by School District No. 60 (Peace River North) effective immediately until return of the incumbent but not beyond June 30, 2020.  The assignment will be at The Key Learning Center.

The Key Learning Centre houses four programs that serve the needs of students in SD 60 and northern British Columbia.  The goal of the Key is to provide quality learning programs that  support learners who need to learn outside the mainstream of our educational system.  Our four programs are: Distributed Learning / Alternative Education / Continuing Education / Summer Learning.

The Key has a staffing complement of seven teachers, nine support staff (clerical, EA, YCW, tech support) and one administrator.  The staff is very innovative and takes full advantage of technologies to bridge distances and create an effective, vibrant social learning environment. Qualifications and Experience

  • Valid BC Ministry of Education Teaching Certificate (or eligible for)
  • Experience with adapting and modifying curriculum to meet the needs of students
  • Qualifications and demonstrated ability to teach at the elementary school level and have prior experience or training in teaching using Distributed Learning (DL) methods.  The assignment will focus on teaching Grades K to 3 and supporting other teachers in delivering an effective DL Primary School Program.
  • A working knowledge, or be willing to quickly learn, the technology needed to deliver all or part of an educational program online. (ie. Be Familia with using tools like Collaborate / Zoom, Moodle, Google Education, FileMaker and Adobe Acrobat to deliver an effective DL program.)
  • A working knowledge of DL elementary programs offerings and procedures.
  • Be aware of current provincial curriculum applying to the primary grades.  Also be able to realize the Ministry of Education initiatives dealing with 21st Century and personalized learning in a DL environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to relate well with students, parents and staff members in both face to face and online environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a partnership with parents / home facilitators.
  • A willingness to incorporate a variety of online learning strategies aligned with best practice in the distributed learning field in their teaching methodologies.
  • The skills to set up a learning environment that supports active engagement among learners and between student and educator through asynchronous and synchronous strategies and through project based learning.
  • An openness to the idea of team teaching several grades in collaboration with one or more teachers.
  • A willingness to develop a social online environment for students to interact and learn in.
  • Strong skill sets with cloud based learning tools and using Macintosh computers in the instructional process and reporting procedures.
  • A working knowledge of Criterion Based Referencing Assessment and Performance Based Assessment, Balanced Literacy, and blended/structured writing process, and the SMART Learning process
  • A willingness to learn about and explore new and tried ways of helping students learn effectively and personally in a DL environment

Compensation

  • $2000 relocation allowance for teachers from BC, AB and Yukon and up to $4000 for teachers from other areas
  • $2,520.09 recruitment allowance (paid over 10 months of the school year, based on the FTE)
  • Salary as per collective agreement. Current salary grid is $48,657 - $91,278
  • Benefits as per collective agreement with option to enroll in medical, dental, extended health, and group life insurance. Benefits are employer paid based on FTE
