School District #60 has a position available for an Educational Assistant II: Certified, to be hired to the District and initially assigned to Upper Halfway Elementary.  Applications will be accepted by the Executive Assistant Human Resources on an ongoing basis until the position if filled.  Reporting to the School Principal, this position is responsible for working under the direction of the classroom teacher and various district resource personnel in providing care for students (training provided by appropriate medical personnel when required).

This position requires an individual to work as part of a collaborative team that provides assistance to teachers in the delivery and implementation of educational programs and services. The educational programs facilitate the integration, growth, learning, safety and comfort of students with a variety of educational/emotional and behavioural needs. The successful candidate will work with special needs students, youth with learning disabilities, those on modified and alternate programs (primarily in a classroom setting), as well as provide, on occasion, pull out support for individuals or small groups.


Duties:
  • Provide instructional support to students to implement educational programs as determined by the teacher/resource team/administrator and provide student with feedback for completion of daily work
  • Constructs/locates instructional materials/games/displays/learning centres
  • Operate computers, audio-visual and various equipment as well as other adaptive technology
  • Supervise the student’s completion of educational activities, as outlined in the IEP, observe and record academic and behavioural assessment data to assist teachers in the monitoring of students
  • Copies, transcribes, types, files, and maintains records
  • Implement behaviour management programs as determined by the teacher/resource team
  • Provide personal/health care and physical safety assistance to students
  • Attend team/parent/professional development meetings as required
  • Assist in the implementation of programs requiring intensive behaviour interventions
  • Supervise students as required in the classroom, gym, school, playground, loading/unloading of bus(es) and field trips
  • Foster student independence and appropriate peer interactions
  • May be required to attend specific workshops at the direction of the Principal
  • Must be willing to maintain current “CPI” status
  • Perform other assigned comparable duties which are within the knowledge and skills required by the job description

 

 

 

 

Hours of Work: Six and one quarter (6.25) hrs/day, Four days per week (Monday-Thursday)
Duties to Commence: 
As soon as possible after closing
Work Year Base: 
Ten (10) months per year
Commencing Salary: 
Based on Certification


Qualifications and Attributes:

  • Minimum of Grade 12 or equivalency
  • Level I First Aid Certificate may be required
  • CPI Training
  • Formal POPARD training or experience
  • An excellent understanding of and ability to effectively implement strategies/approaches to support students who experience severe emotional and behavioural difficulties
  • Excellent interpersonal skills are essential
  • Proven ability to remain calm in difficult situations
  • Proven ability to develop positive relationships with students
  • Demonstrate the ability to be flexible/adaptable when faced with new or challenging situations
  • Educational Assistant Certificate, which includes documented training in the following areas;
  • Pervasive developmental disorders, including ASD, FASD, Complex Behavioural needs
  • Developmental and sensory needs and disorders
  • Personal care: dressing, toileting, feeding, lifting, transferring, seizure management
  • Technology assisted programs (ie. augmentative communication devices, Boardmaker, Apps & other software)
  • Behaviour support: conflict resolution, anger management, non-violent behavioural intervention, behaviour/safety/crisis/emergency plans
  • Learning Challenges: learning disabilities intellectual disabilities, learning challenges
  • Physical ability to keep up with an active child
  • A Criminal Records Search must be completed and results returned to the Administration Office prior to employees starting any position in the District
