Job Description & Requirements

Kitasoo Community School is looking to fill the Grade 3/4 teaching position. This class will have approximately 10 students. 

The following are the requirements for this position:


  • Bachelor of Education

  • Extensive experience on the land (trap lines, living or working in remote Indigenous communities, or other land-based experience) is an asset

  • Experience working in the education field is an asset

  • Knowledge and understanding of Indigenous culture and values

  • Experience in utilization of Traditional Ecological knowledge or cultural knowledge within education-related fields

  • Experience developing and delivering educational programming, specifically in land-based learning activities

  • Creating, using and evaluating personalized teaching tools and techniques used in outdoor experiential education and cultural education activities

  • Excellent leadership, management, motivation and problem-solving skills

  • Ability to speak an indigenous language is an asset

  • Strong Interpersonal Skills

  • Must be willing to provide a police criminal background check

  • Able to work effectively and collaboratively with others

  • Ability to work independently

  • Strong communication skills with proficiency in developing written reports, documents, and the development and delivery of oral presentations

  • Pleasure Craft Boaters License or willing to obtain it

  • Fire Arms Certification will be an asset and or willing to obtain it

  • Duties will include, but may not be limited to:

  • Lead experimental, land-based activities

  • Assist our curriculum developer to develop programming that is based on a cultural land-based program and connections to the land

  • Incorporate land-based practices, protocols and the relationship to First Nation peoples’ identities and ways of life that will promote identity and culture

  • Travel with students to land-based programming sites throughout the Kitasoo/ Xai’Xais traditional territory

  • Other duties related to KCS education as set by the KEA Board of Education

  • Take training related to the position, i.e. First Aid/CPR

  • Maintaining Land-Based Equipment and keep inventory

  • Involve elders for guidance and direction

  • Classroom teacher expectations which include:

    • Provide teaching services within a program of education courses with the highest professional standards consistent with the internal policies and procedures of the Kitasoo Community School with a view to equipping students with strong learning skills in an environment that fosters good character and healthy self-image;
    •  Perform supervision over students to protect their health and safety during school hours and during school events outside of school hours;
    • Participate in extra-curricular activities for students and general supervision of students on school property during recess and noon hours;
    • Carry out the instructions of the Principal concerning teaching, discipline, extra curricular activities and other activities reasonably incidental to teaching and school operations
