Position Description

A temporary full-time (1.0) Learning Assistance (0.6)/Remedy (0.4) Teacher is required by School District No. 60 (Peace River North). The assignment will be at CM Finch Elementary School effective September 1, 2018 to June 30, 2019.  This position includes (0.4) CEF. Non enrolling positions that are funded through the CEF will have as a priority to provide remedy as required.

CM Finch is a K-6 school located in the northwest quadrant of Fort St John.  We have 15 teachers and 20 support staff. Our student population is at 230. The school is a vibrant and caring place.  There is a strong sense of community among the families and staff.  The level of community involvement, mentoring between staff and students, as well as strong leadership in all aspects of our school contributes to our positive school climate.  Our school has a diverse population and a resource room program for students with complex special needs.   An active PAC supports a wide range of curricular and extra-curricular opportunities for students.  See cmfinch@prn.bc.ca for more information.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Valid BC Ministry of Education Teaching Certificate (or eligible for)
  • Masters in Special Education or working towards
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with others to support the learning of students with a wide variety of needs
  • Knowledge of effective research-based teaching strategies and formative assessment techniques
  • Ability/experience to carry out a variety of assessments, including classroom observation, administration and interpretation of norm-referenced assessment instruments, curriculum-based assessments, and diagnostic teaching methods
  • Ability to implement extensive Individual Education Programs (IEP's) (detailing adaptations and modifications) in consultation with classroom teachers, parents, students and district resource personnel
  • Ability/experience to support students designated with Chronic Health Conditions
  • Ability to support teachers within their classrooms to create inclusive learning environments
  • Wide range of teaching and management strategies
  • Knowledge of numeracy and literacy curriculum at the elementary level
  • Knowledge of methods for evaluating and selecting instructional materials suitable for students with a variety of special needs
  • Ability/expertise to work with students either individually or in small groups or in a classroom setting
  • Flexible schedule to chair meetings outside of regular school hours
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, collaborative and organizational skills
  • Advocacy for and empathy with students with special needs
  • Ability to work with students experiencing learning and/or behavioral difficulties
  • Ability/expertise to collaborate with classroom teachers and team-teach when warranted to support the learning of special needs students
  • Commitment to pursue professional development in inclusive education
  • Willingness to work collaboratively with the inclusive education departments/teams and school administration
  • Experience/knowledge of PBIS supports
  • Willing to continue learning assistance programs established in the school such as peer reading

Compensation

  • $700 relocation allowance for teachers from BC, AB and Yukon and up to $1000 for teachers from other areas
  • $2,477 recruitment allowance (paid over 10 months of the school year, based on the FTE)
  • Salary as per collective agreement. Current salary grid is $47,821 to 89,708
  • Benefits as per collective agreement with option to enrol in medical, dental, extended health, and group life insurance. Benefits are employer paid based on FTE
