The Employer: Canada Qingdao Secondary School is under the ownership and direction of Canadian-Sino Education Exchange Centre (CSEEC), Mr. John Zhu, CEO. CSEEC is based in Yantai, Shandong Province and has been in operation for more than 9 years. CSEEC opened its first BC certified school in China in 2008 and now operates 4 schools, all located in Shandong Province. Mr. Zhu has partnered with Rodger Lindstrom in developing schools in which professional environments are nurtured in desirable locations with a good standard of living. Significant features that characterize each school are the high graduation rates of students, and staffs that are appreciated and well-supported in their daily activities. The School: Canada Qingdao Secondary School (CQSS), located in the city of Qingdao, Shandong Province, China, is presently in its eighth year of operation. The school is housed within the campus of a large Chinese school, Qingdao No. 9 High School that enrolls about 2500 grades 10 to 12 students studying the Chinese national curriculum. The school is planning relocation to a new, modern campus in the Huang Dao suburb of Qingdao for the coming school year.
CQSS enrolls approximately 180 students in grades 10 to 12 and is a British Columbia curriculum school, certified by the BC Ministry of Education. Six BC certified teachers and a teaching Principal and Vice Principal are presently employed at CQSS. The school is well resourced with textbooks and supporting materials to meet the needs of all courses offered. Classrooms are equipped with wifi, computers, projectors and Smartboards. The school contains a BC library and computer lab, and has access to fully equipped science labs, a gym and playing fields.
The school is in session from September to early July. Holiday periods include a National Holiday week in October and a 3-week holiday for Chinese New Year in January/February. The school operates on a two-semester system. The school day consists of four 50-minute to one-hour classes, and a tutorial of 40 minutes between 7:20 A.M and 1:40 P.M, with a 40-minute morning break, and a 65-minute lunch break.
The Students: Students are Chinese nationals and have studied English as a Second Language from their Primary years. Students are offered ELL classes in addition to the BC Graduation Program. Core courses include English, Social Studies, Math, Sciences, Planning, PE, and Information Technology. Additional electives are also taught. Students are focused on their academic goals and have a high level of respect for teachers. The goal of most students is to attend a BC or other Canadian University after graduation.
The Community: Qingdao with a population of about 2.7 million, is located in the Province of Shandong in eastern China. It is a port city of skyscrapers, parks and beaches bordering the Yellow Sea. With its historic European architecture and expansive seaside promenade, Qingdao is a popular tourist location within China. Endless sandy beaches, delicious seafood and several local sea festivals all serve to attract visitors, while traditional Chinese open-air markets, vibrant street life, and friendly people all add to the city's unique mix of Eastern and Western cultures. The city is also known for its beer, a legacy of the German occupation (1897-1914). The Qingdao International Beer Festival is major event.
Qingdao is well situated for adventurers who wish to hike or bike the surrounding area, sail, tour nearby islands by sightseeing boat, or explore the many beaches. The area surrounding Qingdao also has hot springs and several golf courses. The city is well served by fast trains and an International airport for travel to other points in China and beyond.
